Criminal Blogger

As covered widely in the media and in this AP report, Joseph Edward Duncan III is accused of kidnapping an eight-year-old girl and her nine-year-old brother. He's suspected of sexually molesting the girl and her brother and then killing him. He's also suspected of killing their older brother, their mother, and the mother's boyfriend.

Duncan was also a blogger. At Blogging the Fifth Nail he wrote openly of his life as a convicted sex offender. In one of his last posts (April 24), writing about the demons he struggles with, he wrote:

I’m afraid, very afraid. If they win then a lot of people will be badly hurt, and they’ve had their way before, so I know what they can do.

In the last post (May 13), he wrote:

As far as "taking people with me" well, I don't know if that is right or wrong. In fact, I don't know much any more what right and wrong even is.

Chilling reading.

Look what he wrote here, in early 2004:

Now I am a professional Software Engineer, but have a hard time finding work or even a place to live because of all the hype surrounding sex offenders. I can't even find a girlfriend, because the kind of woman I like, mature and educated, are terrified when they find out I'm a "Level Three Sex Offender"; which of course I am not, I am an x-convict, and that is all. People must realize that it is never okay to discriminate against any class of people for any reason. Even if that class is so obviously offensive. Discrimination is always based on the perceived offensiveness of a class; blacks where portrayed as a threat to decent society, as were the Jews in Nazi Germany. The truth is that most sex offenders do not re-offend.

Sorry Joe, you just indicted the entire community with one paragraph and your actions.

Wow, Scott. This guy was something. The book needs to be thrown at him -- hard.

There's a larger story here. He kept asking God to help him with his demons, and he knew full well what his demons controlling him would result in...the question is why didn't he just turn himself into an institution and seek help as a way of not harming others? Prayer did not work for him.
